As ORLG said:

Oh, and BTW they lied about catching me, they said that their car has a “max speed” read out but it didn’t and they admitted it, though they did get me to confess I had set the cruise control at 130km.h which is too much for them anyway.

So this one time in high school the local HWY Patrol who was friends with my step dad clocked me at like 85 mph and called my house and told them I was speeding. It would have been better if he had just pulled me over and ticketed me. I think I was grounded for a month.

I guess they wanted to make sure my parents new i was speeding and by how much....eventually you’ll get out of the hole, but I recommend laying low for a while and doing what every is needed to help fill in the hole so you can climb out.....might take some time.

I don’t know how I feel about this. Personally I don’t think hitting 100 is that bad if you were safe about it and didn’t get caught. I allegedly hit 100 when I was 16 but only did it briefly just to hit that speed. I’d be more upset if you were to have done what one of my brothers friends did and drive routinely for like a 45-60 minutes at 120 because that’s just reckless and excessive to me.

I don’t know... I know I set the cruise at 130km/h maybe in one overtaking of trucks or a downhil.

But if I was in my Kia I’d have no issue going 160-180km/h if the engine wasn’t sweating it. To be fair the most dangerous thing is going significantly faster than the other cars; but I’d only go that fast in an empty highway.

I must say this was smart parenting, you could use that technique!

The car in question is the car I use every day which they bought so I understand they have the authority to do it. However, it is still my device of transportation, and while I understand their concern I seriously suspect they will abuse of the capabilities that a system like that would give them, not necessarily for making sure I’m not driving like an idiot or for security, but to snoop on what I’m doing.

Flash forward a week or so and I’m at my grandpas (he gave me the gold card) and he tells me that he heard from a friend of his I got pulled over. I broke immediately and told him the whole story. Their car, their rules. Case closed in that regard.

Whether or not installing a tracker is good parenting is not really our call. I can see them wanting him to be safe however I can also see it as a lack of trust. Similar to the message sent when you have a fiance sign a pre-nup.

So basically:

1) They pay for the car.

2) You live with them.

3) It’s common for cars to have trackers in your country

3b) It’s common in your country to live with parents

4) They pay for the car

6) you were doing stupid shit (don;t worry everyone does it, you just got caught doing it)

7) They want to put tracker on a car they pay for.

Looks like you can tell them to GTFO and buy your own car and have no issues with your privacy being torn apart.

I’m sure most are installed directly into the OBD spot- simply unplug it and you’re good to go.

If its hardwired, you might be able to pull a fuze or something to deny it power.

Other option, that I have absolutely no idea if this will work, is possibly wrapping the module in aluminum foil like a faraday cage. Signal may escape out the front of the module, but if there’s enough metal in the front, its signal with likely be greatly reduced if not invisible.

Problem is, if you screw around with it at all, and your parents find out, your making a bad situation 10x worse...

There’s nothing wrong with that, you do what you gotta do. And yeah, I have an El Salvadoran dad and Guyanese mom, grandma, grandpa, and aunt, all born in said countries. It can’t get worse than that lol.

Personally I think that’s a fucked up thing for a parent to do. I can totally get on board with them for punishing you but the tracker is a step too far imo.

Sorry, but he’s right. Until you’re on your own, they can and should do everything they feel is appropriate. You are their responsibility if your living at home, and/ or on their insurance.

I understand how you feel, and I know I wouldn’t feel great about it if it was me. But seriously you got caught doing something you shouldn’t have been doing. It wasn’t only something your parents told you not to do; it’s the law that tells you not to do it. Action and Consequence.

They could always just take the car away, and then you wouldn’t have to worry about this conversation.

Compromise idea - I wonder if there is a system like Ford MyKey they could install that would prevent excess speed while not affecting your privacy.

Do they own the car and you borrow it from them? If so, I would take the honorable way out and grin and bear it. You, unfortunately, already admitted to them you were speeding and it’s theirs...

When you get your own car eventually, you’ll be free and clear, but if they own it, it’s their right, no offense intended! I guess I look at it this way...if you don’t own it and you’re speeding (even just a bit), you’re breaking the law in THEIR property that is legally registered in their name.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, and I would hate if my parents put Lojack on my car when I was younger, but where it doesn’t belong to you, I can see where they are coming from. Also, if you’re not going to be driving anywhere sketchy and have nothing to hide, why would Lojack being on the car be an issue? Not trying to lay blame or anything, and I don’t want to come off as being a jerk....just laying out my own thoughts. Family are police officers, so I tend to fall on that side of arguments! Just my two cents!

Well, I’d never do 130kph anywhere in Mexico, but that’s because I don’t think I could go any distance at that speed without encountering other cars that are untrustworthy there. That said, I once did a run with an average speed of 175kph when I was about 18-19. I won’t tell you my top speed, but it was definitely dangerously fast (I had to get someone to the southwestern outskirts of Heber and be back to Cottonwood Heights in under 1 hour).

The tech didn’t exist to do trackers of this variety back then (aside from rudimentary lo-jack, which wouldn’t have allowed them to see where I had been or any speeds), but I’m sure I would have been in some amount of trouble for it beyond the police, even though I bought the car (the whole living with the parents thing).

I couldn’t imagine being young today. I don’t speed much anymore (spirited driving in specific areas only and for brief periods) because it’s simply too dangerous (police and other drivers being terrible). I was snagged by mobile radar twice within the first few months after they started putting it in police cars (luckily, one was in MT) and that was mostly the end of my speeding. It has been over 10 years since I have received a ticket for it...

Suck it up, let them do it, learn to drive reasonably, then eventually they’ll quit bothering to check on you, if they bother in the first place.

It’s like that one time that I had this really stupid coworker that I hated dealing with (because he was stupid, no other reason) that had some problem and I solved it by collecting some network traffic. I pointed at the packets, showed him what was wrong, showed some content, etc. A day or two later of stewing, he sent a really long paranoid email to the whole company about spying, privacy, that I can look at their network traffic, etc. I responded quoting the handbook that everyone signed that there was zero expectation of privacy on our network. A handful of friends came to me in the following days to ask about it, and I was like, “Please, do you really think I have time to do that regularly in addition to everything else I’m swamped with? I can, but I have no reason to.”.

You should track your car and keep it reasonable on the streets.
